RI-USO N° 1: cameretta // REPURPOSE No 1: bedroom furniture

Oggi parlo di ri-uso, un argomento a me molto caro. Che si parli di un mobile o di un oggetto più piccolo mi è sempre stato difficile buttare via senza prima aver almeno provato a trovare una seconda vita alle cose. Questo per due motivi: primo tendo a dare un valore affettivo agli oggetti, secondo odio lo spreco!

Today I’m talking about repurpose, a topic very dear to me. Whether it’s a piece of furniture or a smaller object, it’s always been hard for me to throw it away without at least trying to find a second life for things. This is for two reasons: first I tend to give an emotional value to objects, second I hate waste!

Sullo spreco credo che molti saranno d’accordo con me nel dire che la tendenza dilagante all’usa e getta è assurda, oltre che anti-ecologica; mi spiace sempre quando un oggetto si rompe e ti costringono a sostituirlo perché non esiste il pezzo di ricambio o, se esiste, costa di più che l’intero oggetto nuovo, o perché non c’è piu un tecnico/artigiano che sappia ripararlo…

Sul valore affettivo invece si tocca un tasto delicato…. Va bene tenere un oggetto che ci trasmette ancora un emozione, un ricordo importante, ma non voler buttare mai niente a volte è patologico (c’è gente che ha la casa piena di cose inutili che non ricorda neanche di avere…), si deve trovare un equilibrio. Ho letto di recente un libro best-seller mondiale sull’argomento “Il magico potere del riordino” dell’autrice giapponese Marie Kondo, molto interessante.

Condivido la sua opinione che l’ordine aiuti la mente e il corpo, ma forse certi suoi punti di vista sono per me un pò estremi.

Io adotto una mia particolare regola: nel momento del riordino in cui devo chiedermi se buttare una cosa, la tengo solo se riesco ad immaginarne subito un chiaro secondo uso. Fine. Tutto quello che non mi serve più e non ha davvero un legame affettivo forte, va nell’ordine: venduto, regalato, dato in beneficienza, gettato definitivamente.

On matter waste I think many will agree with me in saying that the rampant tendency to disposable is absurd, as well as anti-ecological; I always regret when an object breaks down and force you to replace it because there is no spare part or, if it exists, it costs more than the whole new object, or because there is no longer a technician/ craftsman who knows how to repair it...

On the emotional value instead, you touch a delicate point.... It’s okay to keep an object that still gives an emotion, an important memory, but never want to throw anything away sometimes is pathological (there are people who have a house full of useless things that they don’t even remember to have...), you have to find a balance. I recently read a world best-selling book on the subject of "The Magical Power of Tidying" by Japanese author Marie Kondo, very interesting.

I share her opinion that order helps mind and body, but perhaps some of her views are a bit extreme to me.

I have a particular rule: when tidying up  I ask myself if I should throw something away, I only keep things  if I can immediately imagine a clear second use. End. Everything that I no longer need and does not really have a strong emotional bond, goes in order: sold, given as a gift, given for charity, thrown away definitively.

Questo è un lavoretto semplice. Mio figlio ama i Lego, la base blu era il coperchio di una scatola di cartone di mattoncini, non voleva buttarla cosi ci ho incollato sei bicchieri di plastica e lo usiamo come portamatite sulla sua scrivania! I bicchieri sono doppi per aumentare la robustezza e devo dire che lo usa da molto e regge.

This is a simple diy. My son loves Legos, the blue base was the cover of a cardboard box of bricks, he didn’t want to throw it so I glued six plastic cups and we use it as a pencil holder on his desk! The glasses are double to increase the strength and I must say that he uses it for a long time and holds.

Un altro esempio di ri-uso, ma di mobili, riguarda l’arredamento delle camere dei miei figli.

Abbiamo recuperato i mobili anni 70 della camera di mio marito: due letti e un armadio con struttura marrone e pannelli arancio acceso (!).

I pannelli arancio sono stati coperti da un falegname con un rivestimento di un più tenue giallo. Poi, dato che le stanze sono in mansarda volevo sfruttare tutta l'altezza anche sopra l'armadio, che era alto solo un metro e sessanta.

Another example of repurpose, but of furniture, concerns the furnishing of my children’s rooms.

We have recovered the furniture from the 70s of my husband’s room: two beds and a wardrobe with brown structure and bright orange panels (!).

The orange panels were covered by a carpenter with a coating of a more tenuous yellow. Then, since the rooms are in the attic I wanted to take full advantage of the height even above the closet, which was only 1.6 mt tall.

Quindi ho aggiunto ai due lati dell'armadio due pannelli su misura collegati fra loro in alto da un traverso  obliquo appena sotto il soffitto. Ho applicato del velcro sul traverso e lungo i due lati e chiuso lo spazio sopra la struttura originale con due tende anch'esse su misura, fatte di una tela dello stesso colore delle ante. Con questo sistema "artigianale" ho recuperato tutto lo spazio sopra l'armadio dove posso riporre le scatole con le cose che servono meno di frequente!!

Then I added to the sides of the cabinet two custom panels connected to each other at the top by an oblique cross, just below the ceiling. I applied Velcro on the cross and along the two sides and closed the space above the original structure with two custom  made curtains, same color of the doors. With this "homemade" system I have recovered all the space above the closet where I can store boxes and things less used!!
